In the early 2000's I started experimenting with varnishing watercolors. The idea came about because I wanted to get away from glass. There was a relatively new product out called Clay Board. With Clay Board you could put watercolor on a hard surface, spray it with acrylic varnish and it needed no glass. However, because I love to glaze with many layers of watercolor, the Clay Board didn't work for me. Over time and many failures I came up with various ways to mount my favorite watercolor paper on a stiff backing board. When finished, I varnish with Acrylic Medium-No Glass.

Here are a few samples of large varnished watercolors.
